Does 2012 Signal the End of Time? Belizeans Say No

Maya Descendants Believe End of Calendar Brings New Beginnings

December 21, 2011 (San Pedro, Belize) — Only 365 days remain until the end of the 5126-year-old Mayan calendar next year, and the beliefs of many will be tested as time ticks down in 2012. On December 21, 2012, the world as we know it will end – or so it’s thought by those who believe next year’s end to the 5126-year-old Mayan calendar signals the end of time. However, Maya descendants in Belize, the epicenter of the ancient Mayan world, reject popular doomsday scenarios, and instead see the calendar’s end as a joyous time of spiritual rebirth and new beginnings.

In honor of this historic moment, Belizeans are hosting the “Maya Marriage of Many,” scheduled for the last of the alliteration dates on 12/12/12.  There are thirty-six available slot for couples, along with 218 of their closest friends and family, to take part in an exclusive and unique wedding celebration in Belize, staged on the steps of an ancient Maya Palace at the 3200-year-old Mayan City of Cahal Pech. This will be the first and only time a mass marriage will be permitted to take place on the ruins as each couple’s love story is forever weaved in the fabric of Mayan culture and tradition.

“As the home of the Western Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef and majestic mountains dotted with Maya sites, Belize is a culturally rich destination wedding location for those looking to celebrate their love and good fortune in a truly epic way,” says to Lara Goldman, a destination management consultant and owner and founder of Romantic Travel Belize. “And, since this is the only place in the Yucatan where you can get married on the Maya Palace itself (dating back to 1200 BC), guests will experience something extraordinarily different.”

In celebration of this unique ceremony, 2012 Weddings Belize is holding a Facebook essay contest for a chance to win one slot in the coveted destination wedding at the “Maya Marriage of Many”. The grand-prize winner will be awarded with a luxurious wedding package valued at over $15,000, including an exotic wedding ceremony complete with honeymoon in Belize. The ceremony will be orchestrated by Lara Goldman of Romantic Travel Belize in conjunction with luxury wedding planner Lisa Light of Lisa Light Destinations and celebrity photographer Terry Gruber, among others.
To enter the contest, visit www.facebook.com/2012WeddingsBelize. The contest will officially close on January 31, 2012 and the grand prize winner will be announced on February 14, 2012.
